Osteopathy is a manual therapy focusing on a holistic approach to treatment for each individual and the complaints they present with.
Osteopathy was developed in 1892 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still and was created with a strong association with a number of guiding principles. An example of some of these principles are listed below:
· The body is a unit
· Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
· The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
These principles allow an Osteopath to treat each patient in a unique manner rather than treating the patient and their condition with a pre-prescribed treatment. Ideally, the Osteopath will aim to help the body to return to a position or environment where it can effectively heal itself and maintain good health.
Osteopathy is a primary allied health profession and this allows you to visit our Osteopath without the need for a doctors referral.
Your treatment with our Osteopath will include the Osteopath taking a thorough case history which will be followed by a thorough clinical examination. Your osteopath will then interpret this information to develop a diagnosis and prognosis and follow this with an appropriate treatment plan. This may involve passive treatment delivered by the Osteopath, or an active treatment involving a movement based approach, or both.
